On September 14 the GUILD launched its 2009-10 SPEAKING OF SHAKESPEARE series at the NATIONAL ARTS CLUB with Adam Gopnik, a New Yorker favorite. That program was followed on October 19 by a gathering with linguist Deborah Tannen, who was in the spotlight again November 18, when the GUILD teamed up with the ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION and the PRINCETON CLUB OF WASHINGTON for a lovely evening in D.C. On November 16 actor Richard Easton talked about his associations with legends like Sir John Gielgud and Sir Alec Guinness. On December 14 Harvard University's Marjorie Garber discussed Shakespeare and Modern Culture (2008) and other volumes. On January 13 and 19 the GUILD co-sponsored three events with the inimitable Judith Martin, who joined her daughter Jacobina to introduce Miss Manners’ Guide to a Surprisingly Dignified Wedding. On February 5 we conversed with director and writer Barry Edelstein. On February 8 we joined THE PLAYERS for a staged reading of Mortal Terror by director and critic Robert Brustein. March featured programs with WETA Washington's Around Town critics, with writer Lynne Olson, and with directors Curt Tofteland and Jean Trounstein. On April 12 we conversed with actor John Douglas Thompson. On May 18, with Columbia's James Shapiro, we enjoyed hearing a fresh perspective on the authorship debate. And on June 14 we concluded an eventful season with star actor Liev Schreiber, who had been nominated for a 2010 Tony Award.
