An Evening with Deborah Tannen
On Monday, October 19, at the NATIONAL ARTS CLUB, Georgetown linguist Deborah Tannen introduced You Were Always Mom’s Favorite! to an enthusiastic Manhattan audience. This lively volume, which draws illustrations from Shakespeare as well as from everyday life, illuminates the relationships among sisters. A similar event, co-hosted by the English-Speaking Union and the Princeton Club of Washington, took place at 2101 L Street NW in DC (in the law offices of GREENBERG TRAURIG on the 10th floor) at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18. Copies of Dr. Tannen's latest book were on hand for purchase, and after a presentation hosted by the GUILD’s John Andrews, she was more than happy to inscribe both them and earlier classics.

Deborah Tannen is best known for You Just Don’t Understand!, a publication that
was on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly four years, including a sequence of eight full months at number one. We’re also in her debt for such sprightly and thought-provoking studies as The Argument Culture, I Only Say This Because I
Love You
, Talking from 9 to 5, and You’re Wearing THAT? A frequent contributor
to popular magazines, newspapers, and Internet sites, Dr. Tannen was interviewed for this publication on programs like ABC-TV’s 20/20 and NPR’s Morning Edition.

Admission to most of our events is $25 for members of either the SHAKESPEARE GUILD or the ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION and $30 for non-members. Please visit our Membership page for types of affiliation with the GUILD. There you'll find a link to a page that will enable you to enroll as a constituent, book for programs, or do both.
