Although the Shakespeare Guild was incorporated in the District of Columbia and is still registered there, its offices are now housed in America's oldest capital city, a cultural nexus that was founded four centuries ago, around the same time that an English dramatist began contemplating a “brave new world” on this side of the Atlantic and penning the script that many regard as his epilogue to a brilliant theatrical career.
During the summer of 2011 we helped remind New Mexico audiences of this special moment with a musical Tempest, starring Sir Derek Jacobi as Prospero, at the Lensic Performing Arts Center. It commemorated the 400th anniversary of the earliest-known performance of Shakespeare's most resonant drama. Six years later, in August of 2017, we joined forces with the Santa Fe Botanical Garden to produce another Tempest, a presentation that offered equally powerful echoes of the relationships that make this drama so moving for playgoers in the American Southwest.
Most of the Guild's events have taken place in New York, London, Washington, and Santa Fe, but we're eager to consider engagements in additional settings. Meanwhile we continue to explore new program formats, and we encourage anyone who has further initiatives to propose, or innovative projects to consider, to get in touch with us.
If you’re considering affiliation with the Guild, or would like to make a tax-deductible donation to support its endeavors, we encourage you to visit our Membership page.
