At Ease with John Douglas Thompson
At 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 12, at the NATIONAL ARTS CLUB the GUILD hosted a SPEAKING OF SHAKESPEARE gathering with John Douglas Thompson, an actor who has garnered acclaim for two recent portraits of the title character in Othello, one in the Berkshires at Shakespeare & Company, the other in Manhattan at Theatre for a New Audience, where he won an Obie and a Lucille Lortel Award and a Drama League nomination. Mr. Thompson has also starred in a celebrated revival of The Emperor Jones at the Irish Repertory Theatre. On Broadway he has acted with such notables as Jennifer Garner, Kevin Kline, and Denzel Washington in productions of Cyrano de Bergerac and Julius Caesar. His other stage credits include a riveting Hotspur in a 1 Henry IV that originated with the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and then traveled to Stratford-upon-Avon, where it was showcased as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Complete Works Festival. A few weeks earlier at The Players, Mr. Thompson had been cast as Shakespeare during a staged reading of Mortal Terror, Robert Brustein's drama about eerie parallels between a 1605 Gunpowder Plot in London and Al Qaeda's attacks on Washington and New York in 2001. Mr. Thompson's work on screen includes memorable appearances in the film Michael Clayton and on television programs such as Conviction and Law & Order.
