'Around Town' in Washington
On Thursday, March 11, the GUILD and the ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION joined the WOMAN'S NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CLUB for an Around Town luncheon that provided a sprightly review of spring events on the cultural calendar for our Nation's Capital. Hosted by Robert Aubry Davis, a man who's long been a favorite on both radio and television for WETA and who is now an international presence on XM Sirius satellite radio, this gathering also spotlighted Paul Bachmann, Joe Barber, Bill Dunlop, Janis Goodman, Trey Graham, and Jane Horwitz. They're all popular critics, with regular followings not only on TV26 but on such media outlets as National Public Radio, the Washington Post, and Washington City Paper. As in the past, they offered insights into what is happening in such venues as Arena Stage, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Kennedy Center, the National Gallery of Art, the National Theatre, the Shakespeare Theatre Company, the various museums of the Smithsonian Institution, Studio Theatre, and Washington Shakespeare Company. A delicious luncheon, served at 12:00 noon, led into a one-hour program at 1:00 p.m. Members of the ESU and the SHAKESPEARE GUILD paid $30. Also open to attendees was a cash-bar reception that commenced at 11:30 a.m. An architectural gem with a venerable history that includes Eleanor Roosevelt and other visionary leaders, the WNDC is located at 1526 New Hampshire Avenue NW, just above Dupont Circle.
